- Harper, Toni-Lady Lonely- LP- Living Stereo-RCA LSP 2092 - 1959 33 1/3 RPM LP release by vocalist, Toni Harper. By the time this LP was released, Harper had already had quite a career. A child prodigy, she had an R&B hit with "Candy Store Blues", was a protege of Cab Calloway, performed on the Ed Sullivan TV show, and appeared at Carnegie Hall! Her career ran out of steam in her mid-teens, but she resurfaced in the mid-1950's to record for one LP for Verve, and then a series of LP's for RCA. She exhibits some serious vocal chops on this LP, reminding us at times of Sarah Vaughan. The LP was arranged and conducted by Marty Paich, and features about a 50/50 mix of orchestra and jazzy Big Band backing. Music is a heady mix of Torch and straight Jazz vocals. The songs, which have the sound of standards, are surprisingly all original songs written especially for this project by a class of UCLA undergrads studying songwriting! (Seriously, the results are surprising.) Tracks: Lady Lonely, In the Dark of the Night, He Was a Man, My Heart is a Lonely Hunter, The Lack of Love, Blue It Grows, I Love the Blues, You Taught Me How to Cry, The Velvet Hammer, The Other Woman, Busy Blues, Love Has Come Love Has Gone, River Weep. LP was recorded with RCA's much-lauded Living Stereo process, which produced audiophile-quality vinyl LP's that were considerably ahead of their time. Front cover slick is clean with slight wear and a small sticker stain. A top edge seam split has been neatly repaired from the inside along almost all of its length, as has a short split at bottom right. Back cover shows a little wear and a sticker stain. Disc (heavy vinyl, deep groove, "shaded dog" black and silver label) bears the most desirable dead wax markings: A1/1S, A1/1S, and "I". (This is the very first pressing, made at the higher quality Indiana plant, offering better sound than later pressings.) Vinyl is clean and glossy, showing one spindle mark on the B side which does not affect play. Disc plays beautifully with only minor surface noise and rich, wide-spectrum Living Stereo sound.
