  • Carry Me Back to Old Virginny/Blue Tail Fly-78 RPM 6 Inch Children's Picture Disc- 78- mono-Record Guild of America 2001 - (Approx.) Late 1940's/early 1950's 6" 78 RPM Children's picture disc record. Disc has clear hard shell casing surrounding a paper picture disc inside. 2 traditional American songs are set to orchestral backing w/vocal. This particular disc has a less-than-innocuous content, however, as both sides feature demeaning visual depictions of Black Americans. A side shows aged Black servant walking with a cane in foreground. This song (made Virginia's official state song in 1940) has a long & checkered past due to the racist nature of some of the lyrics. B side depicts a Southern white on horseback who is about to be thrown off his horse, with a young Black servant watching. Disc surface shows numerous marks & scratches. Clear plastic rim of the disc has a broken/missing area of about 3 inches, which should not affect play. Interesting Childrens' & Black Americana item!
